Wheel of Fortune

While watching Wheel of Fortune (& attempting to solve the puzzles), I am struck by the number of people who buy vowels. I don't get the point of buying vowels, as it eats into your total, people should be smart enough to visualise where the vowels go, and it would be annoying if you lose by less than the amount you spent on vowels.
