Japan trip day 3: Studio Ghibli, Shinjuku (2) & Shibuya

Today started off more leisurely, with a 10am departure to Mitaka, where the Ghibli museum was located. Upon arrival at Mitaka, you can either walk to the museum, or catch the bus. The suggestion was to catch the bus there and walk back. I decided to walk first, and catch the bus back, which was not a good idea.
Upon arrival at the museum, I was greeted by a large Totoro at a ticket booth. When I say large, I mean at least 6’5 tall. The entrance to the museum was a bit further up the path, and once in, was in the ground floor lobby. The first exhibition appeared to be a history of animation techniques, with Ghibli movies used as examples. The first floor contained 2 exhibitions: how a movie is animated, and one on Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
The second floor had a gift shop and a kids play area with a Nekobus. The museum was pretty much what I expected.
Now back to the bus. The bus ran from the station to the museum & back, but the trip back had a big detour via most of Mitaka. Next time, I think I’ll follow their recommendation & walk back instead of there.
After the museum, I wandered around Shinjuku, and found myself amazed by the range & quality of the merchandise at the various department stores. Then again, it’s understandable once you see the price tag.
Once I returned to the hotel, I discovered there was a supermarket on the other side of the hotel. This proved useful, as water/tea etc is cheaper then at vending machines.
I caught up with Lily, a high school friend working in Tokyo whom I haven’t seen for a few years, as well today. We had ramen, wandered around Shibuya, and caught up with what has been happening over the past few years. All in all, a fun night.
Tomorrow, a busy day - one or more of the following: Tsujiki, Ginza, Akihabara, Asakusa & Kappabashi. Hopefully I can fit it all in…
