Day 3: Singapore - HK
A quiet day today, with the flight to HK & getting to my uncle's place.
We left the hotel at 10:30 and arrived at the airport after a brief drive around a few hotels.
The check-in for economy was very long. Fortunately, I had checked in online, and they had a dedicated queue for internet check-in, so it didn't take too long.
If you ever have a long transit, Singapore airport is a great place to spend it, with a lot of activities to keep people occupied, including news, sport & movies on TV, health & relaxation, shopping, and most importantly, plenty of internet access. The last feature was put to great use, with the catching up on emails & live cricket streaming.
Eventually, it was time to board. We arrived to a relatively empty gate. Boarding had commenced some time earlier, and we were one of the last to board. Once we got on board, it was obvious why they started boarding early, as the flight was just about 100% full. This flight, unlike the earlier flight, didn't offer internet access, but that didn't really matter.
After takeoff, lunch was served. There was a choice of the Oriental, or International lunch.
The International lunch featured fish & potatoes, while the Oriental lunch, in recognition of Chinese New Year, featured dishes with auspicious names. It featured a dish called Yu Shang, which is a salad of sorts, with candied fruits, shredded vegetables and fish (which was Salmon). with a plum sauce. What you are meant to do is to toss the salad in the air, to promote prosperity, but when you don't have much elbow room, it wasn't attempted.
In addition to the salad, the lunch also offered stir-fried pork with rice. I chose the Oriental meal & rather enjoyed it.
After lunch, ice cream was passed around. It was a tiramisu ice cream, which was coffee ice cream with almonds, and I found it interesting.
By the time lunch was completed, there was an hour left in the flight, so I spent the rest of the time watching the family (parents, 2 kids <5 & their maid) sitting in the row in front, trying to keep the kids amused & quiet. Needless to say, they had their hands full.
We arrived in HK to an overcast afternoon. Sad to say, I managed to predict the gate we arrived at (don't ask).
After arriving, we managed to lug our luggage to the airport express counter, where we bought our tickets. (If you're travelling in a group to a place that isn't served by buses, buy a group ticket, as it's cheaper)
The trip to my uncle's place was uneventful, apart from the throng of Philippino maids who were returning from their day off, which made for a fun ride, keeping track of 4 pieces of luggage in a crowded MTR carrage. Eventually, ew reached our stop, and dragged the luggage the 50m or so to my uncle's place.
Knowing how things work while in HK, i'll be consolidating happenings etc to one post before going on a tour, and possibly one after the tour.
