Japan trip day 5: Yokohama, Imperial Palace, Tokyo Station & Ginza
Last day in Tokyo, and what better way to spend it then by going away!
Yokohama is one of those Hong Kong tour staples because there’s a Chinatown there, and Chinese tours like taking people to places that remind them of home…
While the Chinatown is big, I found prices to be much more expensive then I expected (like 1500 yen for a seafood chow mien). Needless to say, I had lunch in a park overlooking Yokohama harbour.
After lunch, I headed back into Tokyo, and walked around the Imperial Palace. I didn’t see much, just a few guarded gates, with traditional Japanese buildings in the distance. From there, it was a walk through Tokyo station (and its maze-like difficulty to cross from one side to the other). I was hoping to see the Shinkansen up close, but since they seem to be separate from the other JR train lines, I couldn’t see any. After battling my way across Tokyo station, it was off to Ginza, home of flagship stores for every high end item you can think of, and an Apple store. For some reason, they blocked off the main street, so it was pretty much a sea of humanity from one side of the street to the other. Having done what I wanted to do there (ie take photos of people looking at expensive items), it was time to head back to the hotel.
While packing tonight, I had the TV in the background on an interesting movie called Downfall, which looked at the final week or so of Hitler’s life in his bunker. It was very interesting.
Off to Narita tomorrow, as I think staying the night there is better then leaving the hotel at 5:30am for a 9:30am flight.
Edit: It turns out that SBS is showing Downfall this Sunday (28/10) at 9:30pm. It's worth catching.
